We are thrilled to announce that Filming Living Heritage - the film - has been nominated for the prestigious Heritage in Motion Awards!

This short film illustrates how filmmaking itself can become an instrument for safeguarding intangible heritage. More than a documentary, it shows how sound and image can highlight, research, identify, share, and transmit the knowledge, skills, and values passed on from generation to generation.

The film is the culmination of the Focus Craftership project, which between 2021 and 2023 developed a methodology, a practical toolbox, and 11 collaborative film projects exploring living heritage and craftership in Flanders.

The short film Filming Living Heritage was produced by Bokrijk | Craftsmanship & Heritage, Workshop Intangible Heritage BE, and filmmaker Alexander Kerkhof (Feathers on Wings).

With many thanks to CAG, CEMPER, Histories, PARCUM, ETWIE, FARO, all heritage communities involved and the support of the Flemish government.

Filming as a way to safeguard living heritage

What makes Filming Living Heritage special is its focus on film as more than documentation - it is a bridge between past, present, and future. By capturing techniques, gestures, and personal stories in motion and sound, filming living heritage can help to ensure these crafts and traditions remain accessible and inspiring in a rapidly changing world.

Directed and edited by Alexander Kerkhof (Feathers on Wings) and realized through close collaboration with craftspeople and heritage organizations, the film becomes both a tribute to  crafters and practitioners of living heritage, and an invitation to experience this embodied heritage through a cinematic lens.

European recognition for innovation in heritage

The Heritage in Motion Awards celebrate outstanding multimedia projects in the field of cultural heritage across Europe. Our nomination in the Heritage Audiovisuals category recognizes not only the artistic and technical quality of Filming Living Heritage but also its pioneering role in exploring how film can safeguard intangible cultural heritage for future generations.
